Cote d’Ivoire Field Visit Activities
Update: Guillaume Soro, President of the National Assembly of Côte d'Ivoire, highlighted the recent work of the USAID funded Côte d’Ivoire Legislative Strengthening Program implemented by SUNY/CID in his speech marking the opening of the new session of the National Assembly of Côte d’Ivoire. President Soro paraised the LSP’s support to commissions in carrying out field visits in his remarks. A translated version of his remarks may be found here.
In March, the Legislative Strengthening Program in Cote d’Ivoire (LSP) initiated a series of activities to support the commissions of the National Assembly in carrying out Field Visits. Ms. Hannah Shostack was brought to Abidjan to provide trainings and technical support to help them: develop focused topics for investigation, prepare background materials, identify people and institutions of interest, plan the logistics of the visit and write reports and other follow-up activities following the field visit.
As part of the initial training and support, LSP worked with the Commission for Social and Cultural Affairs (CCAC) of the National Assembly to help them plan and conduct field visits within Abidjan as a pilot activity. On March 26, 2014, the SUNY-CI team accompanied members of the commission as they visited the Hemodialysis Center of Cocody and the Felix Houphouet Boigny Cocody University. Participating in this tour were 13 members of the CCAC led by its President Mr. Basil Fregbo. Members were organized into two groups of which one visited the hemodialysis center of Cocody while the other visited the academic entity and the Regional Centre for University of the University of Cocody Felix Houphouet Boigny.
Following the visit, Ms. Shostack and the LSP team led a debrief on the visits to discuss lessons learned and to help prepare for additional field visits. Participants were extremely pleased with the pilot visits and deeply appreciative of LSP’s support. During the second phase of this activity throughout the month of April, LSP will support field visits by the CCAC, the Defense and Security Commission, and the Commission on the Environment and National Parks as they conduct field visits in the communes in Cote d’Ivoire.
